The title of this book is a double entendre referring to both the Cornish sea and the temperamental and tempestuous nature of many of the main characters and their relationships with each other. By the time I reached this book, I would have thought I would be at least accustomed to this but I was completely infuriated by the continuous impulsive and unwise actions and reactions of Ross and several others. Their misadventures continue in this book, frustratingly so but the characters are so finely written and developed that one simply can not stop reading. Graham beautifully captures the hard and heartbreaking lives of his characters in north Cornwall and London. Although the characters continue to frustrate me with their self destructive behavior, they are always true to their nature. As I mentioned in an earlier review, once you start this series you will not rest until you have read all 12 books. Through beautiful writing that creates living, breathing characters (both major and minor)that populate this harsh yet beautiful world, Graham will transport you. Even if your only experience with Ross is through the PBS series you will delight in getting to know this anti-hero and his equally flawed yet fascinating family and friends.With the most shocking, heart-rending ending of the seven books so far, this book is a tear jerker and thought provoking episode in the saga. Although the series has clearly portrayed the helpless and hopeless state of the lot in life of women at the time, this particular book reveals the desperation it evoked in women of all stations.

As the story of Ross and Demelza Poldark continues so do the dramas of their lives and those around them. Their love continues to ground both of them - no matter their hurts or the trials and tribulations of life as they encounter it. The Warleggan dramas continue - and continue to bore too. They are way too predictable and tedious, and sometimes it's just enough already. But Ross, Demelza (especially Demelza because she's sooooo good), their family, their friends, and neighbors continue to intrigue.
As usual, the writer did not disappoint. The series becomes darker and darker with each book. I do not know what to think about the relationship between Demelza and Ross. I love them together and I want them to survive. I was so angry with Ross when he cheated on Demelza and I truly did not understand why Demelza had to cheat on him with Hugh. I understand that we are just humans and we get attracted and the author explains it very well, but I was, I do not know. Ross' s reaction to Demelza's feelings took a different turn, I know he is a man and reacted differently, but ... And then the Elizabeth's story and the ending that really surprised me and shocked me.
Mr, Graham's vivid description of the storm, and setting the climax right during the storm,gave me some of the most wonderful white-knuckle reading that I've EVER experienced!! And I hope that the rest of you, have had much the same experience. It was so much like Herman Wouk's typhoon in "The Caine Mutiny". He could have added though, during Morwenna's shortcut through Trenwith Forest, back to Drake's smithy, some final menace from Tom Harry and/or his goons, against her, but, just as he's about to molest her, storm debris--a flying frisbee roofing slate--decapitates him!! Or, he's crushed by a big windthrown tree. I do hope that they show something like this, in the upcoming Season Four Telecast. This storm sounded like a monster derecho!
This book was a ROCKET of a read; I'd finished it in less than TWO days--even if it was 610-odd pages long. It so goes to show you then, how much fun and excitement you will have, with literature that's clear, and to the point. There's NEVER a dull moment, at Nampara!
I'm reviewing the version, downloaded on June 18, 2018. The version of this book is rife with errors. Many quotation marks are missing, which makes it difficult to discern which character is speaking. Verity, Andrew, and James "Blamey" have been inaccurately turned in "Blarney." Several sentences break off strangely, which makes me wonder if the version left out the end of the sentence. , please edit the version--you should be embarrassed releasing a version with this many errors!
I had read a review that had me afraid to read this book, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one! I quite liked Elizabeth's storyline. She got exactly what she deserved, if not a little less. When you think on it, she is the cause of every single character's pain. She is a poison.
The Poldark circle has been growing wider with each book, but the universe begins to contract here in the seventh installment. What a wild ride! The book takes us through joy, sorrow, anger, vengeance, karma, redemption, love, hate, friendship, loyalty, regret, suspicion, desperation, and growth. We gain further insight into George Warleggan’s character and though it might garner some sympathy, it does not give us anything to like about him. I loved how the author strung us along for several books with a question to which we may THINK we know the answer, but finally shares the truth so matter-of-factly as if it’s a secret just between the reader and himself.
I also enjoyed the review of history provided by this book. As historic fiction, daily life in the late 18th century is always depicted, but the author subtly works in “current events” of the times. I admit my knowledge of the French Revolution and Napoleon’s military conquests was pretty sparse before reading this series. Although never the main focus of the story, Winston Graham weaves in a few details about the British government and economy and the impact of the battles with the French. Through the major character of Doctor Dwight Enys, we gain an appreciation of the medical knowledge and practices of the era and even learn of some of the advances being made at that time.
